What is a “ref” value?

In ClickMagick, a “Ref” or reference value is a short descriptive word that distinguishes one conversion type from another. Typically, the Ref value would describe what is being tracked, such as “optin”, “upsell”, “downsell”, and so on.

Specifying a unique Ref value for each type of conversion in your tracking code is not required, but we highly recommend that you always use them.

For example, you can have multiple types of Action conversions in your funnel, but if none of them have Ref values, then each action event will look identical to ClickMagick as far as your stats are concerned.

However, if the first action has a Ref value of “optin” and the second action has the Ref value “sales-video”, then ClickMagick knows these are different types of conversions and will be tracked separately.

This is true whether you’re tracking Action, Engagement, or Sales conversions.

You can also set custom Ref values if you’re using one of our integrations:

Tip: Ref values can be any combination of letters, numbers, hyphens (“-”), and underscores (“_”). You cannot use spaces in Ref values.

When using the Website Code Wizard, you would add your Ref values here:

By default, all conversions of the same type will be reported together, but you can break down your stats by Ref value.
