What happens to conversions if the Visitor ID or Email cannot be found?


When processing a conversion, here’s what happens:

1 – First we look for a Visitor ID or Email in order to attribute the conversion.

2 – If there’s no Visitor ID or matching Email, we’ll try to figure out how to attribute the conversion by looking for a Project name. The Project name is usually specified in your website code for example, or added to the end of an incoming webhook URL e.g. &cmc_project=my+project

If there’s a valid Project name, we’ll go ahead and create an organic click with a new Visitor ID and attribute the conversion to that Project.

3 – If no Project name is found, we next look at all of your Projects that have received clicks in the past 7 days.

If only one Project has received clicks in the past week we assume you want the conversion attributed to that Project, in which case we generate an organic click and process the conversion as described above.

If you have multiple Projects with clicks in the past week there’s no way we can determine which Project to attribute the conversion to, so it’s not processed.

4 – Finally, if you haven’t received any clicks in the past 7 days but you only have one Project, again we will generate an organic click and a new Visitor ID in order to process the conversion and attribute it to your only Project.
